How To Choose And Buy Port Wine Decanter

Most of the Vintage Port wine needs decanting to separate the sediment or crust from the wine and to ventilate allowing the wine to develop its actual aroma and taste. The best approach to decant Port is to stand the bottle upright for almost an hour or so – even 10 to 15 minutes will help to allow the sediments to fall to the bottom. Then, grab a funnel with a filter and gently pour the Port into the decanter.

Port traditionalists would use a simply crystal Port wine Decanter do you can easily and clearly view the nectar. Generally the Port wine decanter will have a more bulbous base and relatively a short neck. This allows for greater surface area for the oxygen to mix with the wine allowing it to develop to its actual aroma and taste faster.

The universal Ships wine decanter can also be used here to serve Port as well.

A traditional and fun way to serve the Port is by using a Hoggit wine decanter. This is basically a round bottomed decanter with a separate base generally silver or wooden Hoggit base. The idea here is that the Host having filled the glass of their guest to his right passes the Port to his left and the guests then always fill the glass to their right before they pass it on to the left and the decanter passes around the table and is then returned to the base. Because of a rounded base, the wine decanter clearly cannot be put down ensuring that no guest will hog it.

It is also conventionally bad form to reach for the Port or to directly ask for a refill. If the Port is stalled in its travel or if it becomes anchored to the table, the right way is to request the nearest person to the Port if they know the Bishop of Norwich, a reference to an assumed stingy character. Should the response by No I do not know about the Bishop of Norwich, the riposte should be He is an awfully nice chap, but he is never going to pass the port. This should release the port from the base to be passed around to the left to you.

Tradition also has it that the entire decanter or bottle is shared and then drunk at one sitting and that no one leaves the table until it is finished.

The choice of a Port wine decanter is very much personal and depends on your budget and taste. You can buy port wine decanter, as they are available in different styles – be it a hand cut crystal or a plain crystal decanter. The most imperative thing is to enjoy the fellowship, banter and companionship that sharing the Port brings.
